Biography —

Since bursting on to the klezmer and Balkan music scene in the early noughties, She’Koyokh has been at the forefront of UK’s world music scene, releasing four critically acclaimed studio albums. Hailed as “one of London’s musical treasures, playing the best Balkan and klezmer music in Britain” (The Evening Standard) and “among the finest klezmer ensembles on the planet” (The Australian), She'Koyokh's evolution spans the humble origins of busking at East London’s Columbia Road flower market to performing in the famous concert halls of Europe.

She'Koyokh's members hail from the UK, Serbia, Sweden and Turkey. Their live shows are an expertly crafted, multi-lingual exploration from the Baltic to the Black Sea. They bring together the stunning polyphonic melodies and intricate rhythms of Bulgaria, treasured traditions from Serbian villages, exhilarating Gypsy dances from the Romanian mountains and soulful Sephardic and klezmer music from Turkey, Macedonia, Poland and Ukraine.

She'Koyokh has run klezmer and Balkan music workshops in Edinburgh and Aberdeen universities, the Jersey Academy of Music and a week of workshops with the Aldeburgh Young Musicians which culminated in a performance at the Snape Proms.

She’Koyokh, meaning “nice one” in Yiddish, started out with the support of a Millennium Award from the Jewish Music Institute. In March 2017 She’Koyokh released their fourth album, First Dance on Second Avenue, on World Music Network’s Riverboat Records to critical acclaim, receiving a 5 star review in the Evening Standard, ‘Album Choice’ in fROOTS, 4 stars in The Guardian and 4 stars in BBC Music Magazine. The band’s previous albums are Wild Goats and Unmarried Women (2014, Riverboat), Buskers’ Ballroom (2011, ARC Music) and Sandanski’s Chicken (2007, ARC Music).

In 2008 She’Koyokh was awarded first prize in the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, and in 2012 the ensemble was shortlisted for ‘Best Group’ in the Songlines World Music Awards. She’Koyokh has played at WOMAD UK and WOMAD Fuerteventura, Sziget and Kypria Festivals, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, London’s Southbank Centre, the Snape Proms, and at Jewish music festivals in Germany and Poland. They have performed at the Brighton Dome and St George’s Bristol in collaboration with the Aurora Orchestra, as well as in TV appearances and live sessions on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and World on 3.

The Australian

Britain’s best klezmer and Balkan music band

Simon Broughton, Songlines

Our ears tingled as Meg Hamilton’s violin spiralled and sobbed through a wordless Jewish prayer, and two clarinets duelled with the drummer during the climactic Serbian Rumba.

Geoff Brown, The Times, Klezmahler with the Aurora Orchestra

It’s sophisticated, it’s multi-lingual, and it might be an important hint of where klezmer in Britain is headed right now

John Pheby, fRoots

How utterly wonderful it was to hear a genuine melting pot of beautiful, pan-European music, skilfully and lovingly crafted by a troupe of fabulous musicians. They left the sold-out crowd in awe of the fiery and fiercely passionate music on offer.

She’Koyokh have been stars of the UK klezmer scene for some time and are celebrated for their live performances… This is a fine dance album, high-spirited, and with a promise of much more.
