Biography —

Bart Van Reyn, one of Belgium’s leading conductors of the new generation, enjoys a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music.

He has been Chief Conductor of the Danish Radio Choir since 2016, and in 2019 he was also appointed Musical Director of the Flemish Radio Choir.

Bart has worked with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, B’Rock, Il Gardellino baroque orchestra, Casco Phil, Cappella Augustina Köln, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Brandenburger Symphoniker, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

He is also a regular guest conductor with many top-ranking vocal ensembles, such as the Nederlands Kamerkoor, Cappella Amsterdam, Netherlands Radio Choir, MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig, SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, NDR Chor Hamburg, Rundfunkchor Berlin, DR Vokalensemblet, Collegium Vocale Gent and the BBC Singers. He has worked with composers Steve Reich, Tan Dun, James MacMillan and Kaija Saariaho.

Upcoming engagements include concerts with Anima Eterna, as well as several major recording projects with Il Gardellino and the Flemish Radio Choir.

In 2000 Bart founded Octopus, a flexible choir consisting of semi-professional and professional singers. Successful collaborations have followed with all the Belgian symphony orchestras, at major venues and festivals at home and abroad.

In 2012 he went on to found Le Concert d’Anvers, an Antwerp-based period instrument orchestra specializing in repertoire from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Their Haydn CD was selected by BBC Music Magazine as one of the best orchestral recordings of 2020.

In the same year, his love of opera inspired him to set up The Ministry of Operatic Affairs, a travelling opera company, with director Korneel Hamers. They got off to a flying start with successful productions of Don Giovanni, Orfeo ed Euridice, Così fan tutte, Dido & Aeneas and Acis & Galatea.

In this case you almost wish there were a third symphony… ★★★★★

Classica Magazine, January 2020

Without a doubt, praise is particularly due to Bart Van Reyn, for having taken this piece seriously - having sought and found the right way to pitch it: without excessive exuberance, forced romanticism, inappropriate solemnity, the tone is exactly fitting: serious but without heaviness, touching but without pathos.
