On Sunday 11th May, Peter Donohoe reunited with his old friend Sir Simon Rattle to perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 3 in D minor for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s Benevolent Fund concert. Outstanding reviews have followed from the likes of The Guardian, Bachtrack and The Birmingham Post, all giving the concert a five star rating.
Comments from the reviews include:
“Such friendship and familiarity made for a totally unified vision of this work” Peter Marks, Bachtrack
“Simon Rattle brought nobility and urgency while Peter Donohoe played as if visited by the spirit of Rachmaninov…The fire and passion of the closing part of the last movement brought the performance to a magnificent climax. Not surprisingly, the audience erupted” Rian Evans, The Guardian
“Both he [Sir Simon Rattle] and Donohoe were on fire in Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto… Donohoe’s delivery of the solo part was formidable, crisply articulated, dynamics beautifully judged… many people agreed with me that this was a performance which should have been commercially recorded.” Christopher Morley, Birmingham Post
