This week Michael Collins is in Minnesota, performing John Adams’ ‘Gnarly Buttons’ in three debut concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra and Music Director Osmo Vänskä.
Gnarly Buttons, with unusual orchestration of 17 musicians, two of them on electronic keyboards and another on mandolin, banjo and guitar, was written for Michael and premiered in 1966.
His first concert has already garnered high critical acclaim:
“The focus never strayed far from Collins’ exceptional musicality. Through many a clearly difficult passage, he was smooth and dexterous, his caramel tone like a steady guide across uncertain ground.” – The St Paul Pioneer Press
